NMLL offers enrolments in pre-accredited courses and in nationally recognised English as an additional language courses (EAL).
The pre-accredited classes are shorter and suited to those returning to study. The EAL courses are best suited to people who have newly arrived and those wanting to develop their English language skills to seek employment or undertake further study or to better engage in Australian life.
NMLL staff will provide you with information about the options, the eligibility requirements, the costs and the course requirements. Its important to note that NMLL is an adult education provider and not a school. Those under 18 years of age cannot enrol at NMLL.
The EAL has two sources of funding. The eligibility criteria and the selection process are different for each. Student entitlements are also different. NMLL staff will provide detailed information at enquiry, advise the most favourable way to enrol and make the arrangements for you to procced through the selection process.
NMLL offers the EAL course at five levels, from those just beginning to learn English through to a level suitable for entry level work or vocational study. The five levels allow NMLL to place students in the class that best matches individual skills including reading, writing, speaking, listening and understanding. The following section provides an overview of the selection process of both these funding streams. Full details can be provided at enquiry.
All prosecutive EAL students are interviewed by a specialist language teacher to discuss their goals, their learning needs, determine the existing language level and the most suitable class to join. During this process the applicants are also provided with information about the services available to assist course completion and the rights and obligations as a student. The information is summarised in a student handbook provided to each student.
ACFE course applicants are engaged in a similar but less rigorous process which is about ensuring students are placed in courses that best match their skills and interests.

Assessment
At NMLL, students are assessed in accordance with the assessment requirements detailed in the Victorian EAL Framework.
A range of methods are used to assess students, including interviews, participation in group discussions and activities, reading and writing and role play. Certificates and Statements of Attainment are issued in accordance with units of competency attained.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
NMLL offers RPL to AMEP students through the Initial Assessment process, where existing language skills are identified against the ACSF (Australian Core Skills Frameworks). Students are placed in a class offering language skills that have not been achieved.
Skills First students’ existing skills achieved in prior study or through experience, are similarly recognised through the pre-training review (PTR) process.
Credit Transfer (CT) and Recognition of AQF qualifications
Accredited units, modules and courses undertaken at another Registered Training Organisation (RTO) can be recognised by NMLL if an original Statement of Attainment from the other RTO or an authorised copy is provided. This service is restricted to the courses and units NMLL is approved to deliver as indicated on NMLL’s current Scope of Registration.
